My Story
It was through Daren's friend Lucila that I was introduced to IRMO back in 2012 after arriving in London and since then it's become a huge part of my life in London. I've been involved in a range of different activities, teaching English, writing funding bids (even a bit of sponsored running!); learnt loads; and met some amazing people! It's been quite a journey, with my PhD research ending up having a distinctly Latin American flavour. I've been a trustee for the last four years and have been slowly trying to get everyone involved in IRMO, I even got my mum helping out at one stage with English classes! Daren and I are lucky to be setting out on this next stage of our lives with few material needs, we'd love it if through our celebration we were able to help support those who really need it.
IRMO is a small, but mighty, charity that works with the Latin American community in London. The Latin American community is made up of lots of incredibly hard-working, big hearted people. But having recently arrived in London, many face challenges particularly suffering from in-work poverty; working anti-social hours in cleaning and living in overcrowded accommodation, often with whole families in one room. People struggle to progress in the labour market due to the lack of English knowledge.
IRMO seeks to provide people with skills, knowledge and information to allow them to build fulfilled and dignified lives in the UK. It does this through a range of projects and services: English classes, employment support, homework clubs for children, activities for young people, housing, welfare and immigration advice... The list goes on and on! IRMO really is different to other charities, it does a huge amount despite being underfunded, in great part thanks to the passion and commitment of our staff and volunteers. The organisation and the work that it does means a lot to us so we're really grateful for any support you can give!
